Western Movie: by Jon Flaming | Oct 27 - Nov 25
David Dike Fine Art presents a new series of artwork by celebrated Texas Artist, Jon Flaming. The Western Movie series is a collection of new works inspired by the Friday night TV westerns from the 60’s and 70’s. Viewers will discover a vibrant and fresh new look in Flaming’s technique. This is Flaming’s 4th one-man show at David Dike Fine Art.
This show will contain works indicative of Flaming’s signature style. Many of the paintings mark a turning point in his approach that can be seen through his representation of figures and composition. The self-taught artist’s neo-regionalist style has both a folk art and Texas Regionalist look inspired by some of the Dallas Nine artists. Traditionally, the images and sentiment captured in Flaming’s work reminds the viewer the of the spirit of a time past; an era when small town Texas was occupied by salt-of-the earth folk who were content with hard work and the simple pleasures of stability and Grace. In his work you will often find signs of this life and work whether it’s renderings of a pick-up truck circa late 1950, farm tools leaning on an old farmhouse, a cherished cowboy hat, vacant motel or a cross.
In this new style he still uses bold color, but the strokes and use of color are juxtaposed to create lines and forms for a dramatic thought provoking effect. Not only is the technique vibrant, new and unlike any other, but the inspiration for Western Movie is just that; vibrant – the TV westerns in their time could transport a young mind to gallantly save the town, the girl or just be cool in a cowboy hat with a lit cigarette.
Flaming’s Western Movie series includes paintings that convey shadows of a past time. These new pieces not only portray an advance in style for the artist, but also capture nostalgia from his childhood. Flaming is known on a National level and here in Texas as one of the great “neo-regionalists” of his time. East Meets West: Capturing the Spirit of Texas through Japanese Woodblocks by Daryl Howard | Sept 24 - Oct 21
Austin based artist Daryl Howard authentically presents an East Asian technique of woodblocking, which dates back to 2nd century B.C. in China, and brings it to the 21st century to reflect nature’s forms. The show incorporates Howard’s Japanese woodblock prints as well as mixed media collage inspired by the natural Texas landscape. Her prints exude a brilliance of color juxtaposed by compelling black, and her architectural scenes and landscapes are refreshing visions close to her heart, drawing inspiration from world travel to the beauty of her home state.
Howard was introduced to this art form while teaching art in Tokyo in the 1970’s after receiving her BFA from Sam Houston State University. Howard was inspired by the 18th and 19th century Ukiyo-e woodcuts, and promptly began studying the technique by way of an apprenticeship with master print maker Hodaka Yoshida. After her studies with Yoshida and now proficient in the medium, she returned to her home state and graduated from the University of Texas with an MFA.
Since that time, Howard has traveled the globe nurturing her passion for the medium as well as mixed media collage. She has been exhibited and represented internationally since 1989, and her work is currently housed in over 75 permanent collections. Her art has also been reproduced in national publications. She exhibits through her studio on her ranch in Austin. Collectors anticipate her biannual exhibition, a one-day event held in the pavilion on her ranch in Austin.
